Midnight Message: Painting #54

Artists for A Pristine PlanetMidnight Message: Painting #54! Do you ever have Dreams that are so crystal clear that you just know you’ll remember every shred of them when you awaken in the morning?

I get those in the afternoon if I take a fiver – I wake up with images and ideas rockin’ and rollin’ – it’s actually where I get a lot of the idea for these paintings!

This was a particularly difficult image to prepare for online viewing because of the contrast of the red underpainting and the green-blue over painting. It appears darker here than the original.

Here is what the journal, mousey pad and pillow look like, too.

Almost Across the Line: Painting #55

Artists for A Pristine PlanetSOLD. Almost Across the Line: Painting #55! Every evening I hear/see the outrigger canoes racing up and back down the canal behind my house.

From little kids to men in their 70s, it’s always exciting to hear the clank of paddle against hull, the “HUT” cry of the steering guy, and the shuffle of hands and paddles as they shift from paddling on one side to the other. Here, they’re almost home, almost across the finish line as the sun sinks….

My Thoughts Fly Far Beyond Me: Painting #37

Artists for A Pristine PlanetMy Thoughts Fly Far Beyond Me: Painting #37. I did a painting a long time ago that I like so much I won’t sell it. Its title is “My Thoughts Go Out Far Beyond Me,” and as you can guess, was the inspiration for this one.

My thinking is this: if we truly are One, there’s only One of us here, and what I think goes out to infinity and back again, and affects your reality just as much as mine. After all, if we really are One, you are me and I am you and we are all together! Sound familiar?

This was a fast painting because I have a meeting I have to go to tonight and I didn’t want to have to finish it and upload it after I got home. What a challenge to paint so fast – my I-need-to-get-it-perfecter bell was clanging away –

Fly Free from Normal: Painting #61!

Artists for A Pristine PlanetSOLD. Fly Free from Normal: Painting #60!

Isn’t it amazing how normal we’re expected to act?

There isn’t an average human being on the planet, yet we are measured by this norm and that norm all the time!

Isn’t it Time we all flew free of trying to play small and normal and safe, and took on Artists for A Pristine Planetour grand, powerful, lovely huge selves?

What potential we all have!

Yet how many people go to the grave with theirs?

That beautiful Potential, buried at age 5, never to come out again – sad, unfulfilled, unblossomed.

What are you doing in your life to bring out, nurture and let your own beautiful potential blossom?

I Missed You, Painting #38

Artists for A Pristine PlanetI Missed You, Painting #38.

I recently saw a photo of a polar bear playing with some huskies at a winter camp.

It was so cool to see how the dogs allowed Big Bear to play gently with them.

It made me think of how we could do the same with our Inner Bears and Tigers and Lions – welcome them, hug them and make them feel at home.

Maybe that way they’d feel more appreciated, and come out only when appropriate, instead of leaking out at times when they really ought to stay in the background.

Once a well-known ‘spiritual guru’ told me that ‘we only have 3 spirit guides,” and I watched as the legions of angels I was accustomed to having with me disappeared.

The Head Angel came to me and said, “Angela, why do you allow him to create your reality for you? We’ll be here as long as you live and beyond. Ask us to come back, and we will.” I did, and they did. Fooey on people who try to tell me what kind and how many guides I have!

Red Night: Painting #48

Artists for A Pristine PlanetRed Night: Painting #48.

What happens when you hate what you painted and start to paint over it? Sometimes it gets better than it was in the first place.

That’s what happened today. I felt like a mush head all day – by Friday, if I’ve been going over my limit of an hour or an hour and a half for a painting – like I have this week! – I end up exhausted.

I started to paint a rag-tag combo of Rousseau-like elements, and got about half done and hated it.

Artists for A Pristine PlanetSo I painted it yellow, and then a coat of magenta…and all of a sudden, the mood shifted…it was sweet…and I liked it!

So I added a few more elements and presto, it was done! I like it much better than the painting I had planned, too!

Here’s what the pillow looks like, and the painting is shown here in a frame for illustration purposes only – frame NOT included.

This one was painted in acrylics on heavy watercolor paper mounted on a 12″ x 9″ canvas.

The Village and the Sea – A New Agreement? Painting #47

Artists for A Pristine PlanetThe Village and the Sea – A New Agreement? Painting #47.

Chagall was an amazing painter. I always liked his stained-glass-like colors, but until I tried actually painting like him, I never realized how masterful he was.

In his original painting (posted below), called “the Village and I”, he uses various devices to pull you in and literally guide your eye as he wants you to see the story.

My guiding lines are more blatant than his, but that’s OK. It still works. You can see the sacred spiral that starts at the top right with the village.

Under that, you’ll see what looks like the grim reaper and a women holding something.

I never saw it before, but she’s holding a line like a string that goes from the fish’s eye to the human’s and then to herself.

In Chagall’s version, the string is attached to a cow, perhaps signifying the village’s interdependence with the animals and other critters the village ate and produced, and the animals who depended on the humans to keep safe from wild animals and weather.

Artists for A Pristine PlanetHe has a farmer stepping over that line, going out to the fields to reap the harvest. In my version, I wanted it to look like the Reaper will cut that connecting line if we don’t make an agreement soon, and take action to keep the seas safe.

Now you follow that spiral line down to the fish – the Spokes-Fish for the seas? – with the red moon under it – bloody with the death of the ocean creatures? Red for rebirth? The red crescent moon for wild, powerful women who are taking action now more than ever to help the planet? Maybe all three….

Now you get to the human, whose mouth is within the inner circle with the fish’s – communication? Their eyes are certainly targeted on each other’s. Then the posey and the background red of life-beginnings, regeneration, life.

The human is green, which I don’t have to say much about, since green seems to be such a buzz-word now; and is offering a posey – hopefully a peace offering and sign of intention for husbandry. It’s within a special triangular shape, perhaps a wedge opening a new space for future possibilities with the inner circle.

I really liked it that Chagall added such whimsical touches as the necklaces and the rick-rack design on the hat, as well as the odd configuration of the human’s eyeball – almost looks like an old rotary phone. Hard to believe that his painting was done almost exactly 100 years ago!

Painting #6: Puerto Vallarta Umbrella

Artists for a Pristine Planet

Puerto Vallarta Umbrell: Painting #6

This is kind of an odd bird – I almost threw out the photo I used for reference for this piece as I went through my photogrpahs after I got home from Mexico because it was so fuzzy.

But after looking at it more, I decided it was kind of neat and thought I’d paint it, instead.

I love how the pinkish ‘auras’ around the people get kind of shmooshed into the layers of the sunset – that was how they really looked.

It had been a very hot, dusty day, and there was no breeze. Everyone and his left brother was on the beach, trying to cool down, waiting for the evening breeze, enjoying each others’ company as the sun slipped into the rosy sea.

Tall Poppy Syndrome: Painting #60!

Artists for A Pristine PlanetTall Poppy Syndrome: Painting #60!

Now this may be one of my biggest Pet Peeves: being cut down for individuality or excellence in order to maintain the societal or cultural status quo.

Here in the US, we are constantly admonished to excel, be yourself, live your dream – yet many times when we do, we are cut down, scolded, shamed, embarrassed for sticking out, and in general whittled down “to size.”

I first heard the expression, tall poppy syndrome when I was in New Zealand.

I heard someone talking about how an Olympic athlete had won a silver medal – good for her country and all – and then she criticized the winner for how she comported herself during the ceremony. Rah, rah, our country (whatever country it might be), we got the silver – but then cut down the winner? Wow. Pretty nasty!

But don’t we see instances of that everywhere?

Girls trying to look dumb in junior high so the boys will like them because they’re not smarter than the boys are – people laughing when they see gurus of any kind blowing it – why do we feel we have to do that?

How about where you live?

International Coastal Clean Ups Near You….

Artists for A Pristine PlanetAs A volunteer (organizations and individuals) you can join the international Coastal Cleanups to keep our beaches clean.

By doing this, we minimize the amount of trash swept from our coastlines, as these will ultimately end up in the Pacific Garbage Patch.

Many volunteers walk, while other set out on boats or don scuba gear to remove garbage from below the ocean’s surface.

This is the perfect opportunity to do YOUR bit, as people from all ages and walks of life come together for a common goal: to rid our oceans of garbage.

The coastal clean up of 2009 collected 1.1 million plastic bags, and enough cups, plates, knives and forks for a picnic for 100,000 people!

We – you and I – are responsible for the garbage currently floating around in our oceans, and every single bottle or bag we negligently throw away will have a negative impact on our environment.

By joining a Coastal Clean Up, we can prevent that, help clean up what we’ve already messed up, and maybe even provide a pollution-free planet for the next generation. What beaches and waterways are near you that you can spend a couple hours helping to clean every so often?

“Floating Islands” of Garbage in Our Oceans: the Junk Raft Project

Artists for A Pristine PlanetThe Junk Raft project (http://junkraft.com) was funded by the Algalita Marine Research Foundation.

Its aim was to “creatively raise awareness about plastic debris and pollution in the ocean,” specifically targeting the Great Pacific Garbage Patch…

“sailing to Hawaii on 15,000 plastic bottles and a Cessna 310, to raise awareness about plastic fouling our oceans.

“They sailed 2600 miles in a 30 foot-long raft made from an old Cessna 310 aircraft fuselage and 6 pontoons filled with 15 000 plastic bottles. I presented our last gyre sample from our marine debris trawl. In a glass peanut butter jar were hundreds of fragments of plastic and zooplankton floating around. “This is what you get when you skim the ocean surface. 2/3rds of the earth is ocean, and is now a plastic soup.”

“I also showed the shriveled stomach from the rainbow runner I caught a couple weeks ago, with 14 fragments of plastic in it’s stomach. This is why we crossed this ocean. Then we talked about what we do about it.(Image and text in blue: from http://junkraft.com)

Dr. Marcus Eriksen, also from the Algalita Foundation, crewed the Junk Raft, along with Film maker Joel Paschal. Many volunteers lent a hand in the construction of the Junk Raft by collecting bottles and cleaning them. These volunteers included Bell Elementary, Santa Monica High School and the Westbridge School for Girls.

The junk raft sailed from Long Beach California, where to Foundation is situation, to Honolulu, Hawaii. Just like the Kaisei Mission, the Algalitha Marine Research Foundation will fund more expeditions in the future, which will focus on the removal of ocean garbage.

So, yes! There are indeed foundations and organizations out there who do their part to clean up the garbage patch. What can YOU do to help?

Stay tuned – more this week onother projects….
